In the case of a curve other than a circle, it is often useful first to inscribe a circle to the curve at a given point so that it is tangent to the curve at that point and “hugs” the curve as closely as possible in a neighborhood of the point ( Figure 3.6). In this case you would need to turn more sharply to stay on the road. In this case you would barely have to turn the wheel to stay on the road. Suppose the road lies on an arc of a large circle. The smaller the radius of the circle, the greater the curvature. The concept of curvature provides a way to measure how sharply a smooth curve turns. CurvatureĪn important topic related to arc length is curvature. Then, use the relationship between the arc length and the parameter t to find an arc-length parameterization of r ( t ). The arc-length parameterization also appears in the context of curvature (which we examine later in this section) and line integrals, which we study in the Introduction to Vector Calculus. One advantage of finding the arc-length parameterization is that the distance traveled along the curve starting from s = 0 s = 0 is now equal to the parameter s. Since the variable s represents the arc length, we call this an arc-length parameterization of the original function r ( t ). The vector-valued function is now written in terms of the parameter s. We can then reparameterize the original function r ( t ) r ( t ) by substituting the expression for t back into r ( t ). Suppose that we find the arc-length function s ( t ) s ( t ) and are able to solve this function for t as a function of s. The new parameterization still defines a circle of radius 3, but now we need only use the values 0 ≤ t ≤ π / 2 0 ≤ t ≤ π / 2 to traverse the circle once. For example, if we have a function r ( t ) = 〈 3 cos t, 3 sin t 〉, 0 ≤ t ≤ 2 π r ( t ) = 〈 3 cos t, 3 sin t 〉, 0 ≤ t ≤ 2 π that parameterizes a circle of radius 3, we can change the parameter from t to 4 t, 4 t, obtaining a new parameterization r ( t ) = 〈 3 cos 4 t, 3 sin 4 t 〉. Recall that any vector-valued function can be reparameterized via a change of variables. Ī useful application of this theorem is to find an alternative parameterization of a given curve, called an arc-length parameterization. If ‖ r ′ ( t ) ‖ = 1 ‖ r ′ ( t ) ‖ = 1 for all t ≥ a, t ≥ a, then the parameter t represents the arc length from the starting point at t = a. The formula for the arc-length function follows directly from the formula for arc length:įurthermore, d s d t = ‖ r ′ ( t ) ‖ > 0. If a vector-valued function represents the position of a particle in space as a function of time, then the arc-length function measures how far that particle travels as a function of time. Let’s take this one step further and examine what an arc-length function is. We now have a formula for the arc length of a curve defined by a vector-valued function. This gives a formula for the length of a wire needed to form a helix with N turns that has radius R and height h. Recall Arc Length of a Parametric Curve, which states that the formula for the arc length of a curve defined by the parametric functions x = x ( t ), y = y ( t ), t 1 ≤ t ≤ t 2 x = x ( t ), y = y ( t ), t 1 ≤ t ≤ t 2 is given by We have seen how a vector-valued function describes a curve in either two or three dimensions. We explore each of these concepts in this section. This is described by the curvature of the function at that point. Or, suppose that the vector-valued function describes a road we are building and we want to determine how sharply the road curves at a given point. We would like to determine how far the particle has traveled over a given time interval, which can be described by the arc length of the path it follows. For example, suppose a vector-valued function describes the motion of a particle in space. In this section, we study formulas related to curves in both two and three dimensions, and see how they are related to various properties of the same curve. 3.3.3 Describe the meaning of the normal and binormal vectors of a curve in space.3.3.2 Explain the meaning of the curvature of a curve in space and state its formula.3.3.1 Determine the length of a particle’s path in space by using the arc-length function.

How do we know titanium dioxide sunscreen products are safe?įDA regulates the safety and effectiveness of sunscreens and their ingredients, including titanium dioxide. How do we know zinc oxide sunscreen products are safe?įDA has conducted extensive reviews on the safety of zinc oxide and has approved its use in over-the-counter skin protectants and sunscreen products at concentrations up to 25 percent. Several other ingredients are under FDA consideration. To date, FDA has approved 17 ingredients for use in sunscreen, including oxybenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. How do I know if sunscreen ingredients are safe?įDA must approve any active ingredient before it can be used in sunscreen. Currently, FDA has approved 17 ingredients for use in sunscreen, including oxybenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and several more are under FDA consideration 11. Other Frequently Asked Questionsīefore an ingredient can be used in sunscreen, it must be approved by the FDA. The FDA has several safety and effectiveness regulations in place that govern the manufacture and marketing of all sunscreen products (including safety data on its ingredients). In the U.S., FDA regulates sunscreen products as over the counter (OTC) drugs. In general, according to AAD, when you see the term “baby” on the sunscreen label, it means the sunscreen contains only these two active ingredients: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.įor children younger than 6 months, AAD states that parents and caregivers should avoid using sunscreen on these children, and instead protect their skin from the sun by keeping them in the shade and dressing them in long-sleeved shirts, pants and wide-brimmed hats.įor children 6 months and older, AAD advises parents and caregivers to use a sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which protects the sensitive skin of babies and toddlers. How do I know a sunscreen is safe for babies or children? For children 6 months and older, AAD advises parents and caregivers use a sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which protects the sensitive skin of babies and toddlers 10. The AAD states unambiguously that “sunscreen is safe to use” and that “no published studies show that sunscreen is toxic to humans or hazardous to human health.” 9 For children younger than 6 months, AAD states that parents and caregivers should avoid using sunscreen, and instead protect young children’s skin from the sun by keeping them in the shade and dressing them in long-sleeved shirts, pants and wide-brimmed hats. As the sunscreen’s SPF level increases, sunburn protection increases 8. SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how much UV radiation is required to produce sunburn on skin protected with sunscreen, as compared to unprotected skin. Titanium dioxide is often a primary ingredient in sunscreen because it works well as a UV filtering ingredient.Ĭhemical sunscreens contain carbon-containing molecules that absorb light, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and avobenzone. Mineral sunscreens, also called sunblock, contain the active ingredients titanium dioxide or zinc oxide and protect the skin by deflecting the sun’s rays. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 5 states that “given the recognized public health benefits of sunscreen use, Americans should continue to use sunscreen with other sun protective measures.” AAD also states that the benefits of sunscreen usage outweigh any unproven claims of toxicity or human health hazard from ingredients in sunscreens, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide 4.The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that scientific evidence supports the benefits of using sunscreen to minimize short-term and long-term damage to the skin from the sun’s rays 3.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has listed sunscreen use as an easy way people can reduce their risk of skin cancer 2. Here’s a quick round up of sunscreen safety facts from the trusted experts: Take time to mentally prepare for the transition by researching and learning about SEU’s campus and resources. First, familiarize yourself with our campus safety rules and regulations set by your college regarding dorm life. Q: How can I prepare myself to live in a college dorm?Ī: Preparing yourself to live in on campus at SEU involves several steps. Be sure to get to know your roommates and neighbors! Consider investing in cozy, comfortable bedding and pillows. Bring items that hold sentimental value or remind you of home, such as photos, posters, or decorations. Q: How can I feel more at home in my college dorm?Ī: Making your room feel like home is all about personalizing your space. If you fall into one of these categories, be sure to check with your coach or the residence life office to find out if early move-in applies to you. These groups often have specific needs or responsibilities that require them to move in earlier than other students. Q: Can I move into my college dorm early?Ī: Certain student groups, like athletes, student leaders, and international students, may have earlier arrival times. Follow the above checklist of essential items and be sure to add any additional items from our suggested list that will make your college experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Additionally, think about your personal needs and preferences. Q: How do I decide what to bring to college?Ī: To make the process of deciding what to bring easier, consider factors such as the size of your dorm room, the amenities provided by SEU (like free laundry room use!), and the climate of the area (Central Florida is beautiful, but also warm for most of the year). Note that while you’re not required to own a computer, many students find that bringing their own laptop is very helpful, since it allows you to work and study just about anywhere. If you prefer to tune in to music while you study, remember your headphones. You’ll always want to stay connected, so be sure to bring your phone charger. While “campus casual” is the standard for attire around SEU, it’s a good idea to bring along a few professional-looking pieces of clothing for events such as in-class presentations, internship interviews or job fairs. Most students use items such as white sticky tack, which removes cleanly and does not damage the walls. Just remember you can’t use anything permanent or damaging, such as nails, to attach anything to your dorm walls. While not necessary, you might consider these items to help you feel more at home. Mini-refrigerator 4 cubic feet or less (approximately 20”x 20”)**.Day-to-day necessities such as an umbrella, sunglasses and a flashlight.Laundry supplies (such as a laundry basket or bag, detergent and dryer sheets).Bed linens such as blanket, bedspread, pillow, mattress pad and sheets*.While your individual needs may vary, here’s a good list of necessities to get you started. Mini blinds are provided for the windows in all dorms. If you’re living on-campus in one of our residence halls, you should know that each room includes beds, desks, chairs, closet space and dressers appropriate for the number of students assigned to that room. One of the main goals of the Invisible Disabilities campaign is to raise awareness and break some of the stigma surrounding such disabilities, specifically chronic illnesses that are not obvious to the eye.įollowing this is the Dynamic Disabilities campaign, which will raise awareness for chronic disabilities that fluctuate in their intensity. “There a lot of people who don’t feel like they’re disabled enough, because they’re not visibly disabled,” they said. According to Meuser, anxiety, depression, brain injuries, and chronic illnesses are all invisible disabilities, and are more common than many might assume. The focus of the first week is invisible disabilities, which are disabilities that are not immediately apparent or visible, but that typically impair a person’s daily life.
